Sooper Design proudly showcases some of Australia's most innovative and creative designers

Marc Pascal

The iconic lighting designer, Marc Pascal creates striking and contemporary luminaires in Australia. I meet Marc at his warehouse studio, and it must be the coldest day in Melbourne. Typical Melbournians we are both hankering for hot coffees. Hey presto…two espressos!

Marc is a delight. Completely unassuming and his place reminds me of my art school days. Creative, with lots of eclectic furniture. Marc’s leverages his formal training in both product design and later fine art to develop his unique style. Having both disciplines he understands the structural limitations and yet maintains the freedom to express his artistic side.

In real life, the lights are beautiful. Colourful, very colourful. The pendants seem to float from the ceiling, and exude a delicate and uplifting, dream-like mood. The luminaires are a mix combination of dyed polycarbonate die-cuts. Built to be robust, they seem so delicate.

Marc’s work depicts his constant experimentation with colour, the impact of light and shadow, and how that transcends into motion and space. He challenges himself by incorporating new technologies and developing other interior products.

He’s tools and moulds, and the polycarbonate film are all dyed and assembled on-site. The hands on approach has allowed Marc to have full artistic control and flexibility to continue experimenting and de’lighting’ us.
