Dress Code - Cafe Tsubaki

Fukutoshi, or Toshi, Ueno is a Brisbane designer with a totally infectious and animated enthusiasm. His resume is a ‘wow’ list of awards and accolades, exhibitions and commissions. In 2011, his dress code collection became one of the permanent collections at the National Gallery of Australia.

From a collaboration between talented Brisbane designer Fukutoshi Ueno and celebrated Australian fashion designer Akira Isogawa, comes this gorgeously striking piece that serves as a stool, table, shelf, an object to gaze at and a conversation starter. 

The shape and structure of the piece is inspired by the symbols assigned to the mistresses of the 11th Century Japanese nobleman, Hikaru Genji. while the stunning surface patterns, by Akira Isogawa, are inspired by the appearance of traditional kimono fabrics when seen under the intensity of the bright Australian sun. The combination of fashion ‘dress’ and symbol ‘code’ inspiring the name ‘dress code’

Designed to share a piece of Japanese culture and fashion through a three dimensional, functional object, the café range is constructed using AA grade marine plywood which is then digitally printed. It is crafted and manufactured by blok furniture to the superb standards for which they are recognized.
